Day 12: Canvey Island

Continuing to take advantage of the lack of rain over the last week or so, I was out again today on possibly the coldest day of the year.

Canvey Island is often described as a fairly undesirable place but in the middle of winter I found it to be an amazingly tranquil place. There was hardly anyone walking around although I did see the occasional hiker on Concord Beach. There's an utter lack of through traffic too. It almost seemed like the town was closed.

This road name caught my eye - it's clearly Dutch, and on further investigation Hellendoorn is way back from the sea nearer the German border, although it is connected by canals to the IJsselmeer. I wondered if this road name was commemorating some long-forgotten trading partnership between the two towns.
