Day 5: Noak Bridge

A nice easy walk from my house to the village of Noak Bridge. It's a village now - I'm sure about 20 years ago it was just a housing estate but now it has its own village sign and everything.

The original Noak Bridge crosses the river Crouch on Noak Hill Road, marking the boundary between Billericay and Laindon and is about 2 miles away from the village, so I never really understood how it took that name.

The history of Noak Bridge is quite interesting. The houses were mostly built between 1979 and 1982 and (before my time here) was once called the Wash Road Estate, which in itself was named after the ford ("wash") near Harding Elms Road. There's a bridge there now.

A number of the street names are South African, which reflects the old road names when the are was made up of plotlands in the mid 20th century. After the plotlands were removed with the coming of the new town, the area became secondary woodland before the new estate/village was built.
